TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WCJB) -Florida junior Elizabeth Hightower tossed her sixth complete game shutout of the season on Friday, and it came in a big spot as the No. 5 Gators blanked No. 3 Alabama, 2-0 to open a key SEC softball road series. Florida (31-5, 11-2 SEC) stays even with league-leading Arkansas in the loss column, and sends Alabama (32-6 overall, 11-5 SEC) to its third home loss.

The only scoring in the game came in the top of the second inning on Sarah Longley’s two-run single delivering Kendyl Lindaman and Julia Cottrill. Cottrill and Cheyenne Lindsey managed two hits apiece of Florida’s six for the game.

Alabama managed only three hits off Hightower and was blanked for the third time this season.

Florida shook off Wednesday’s 7-0 home loss to UCF in which the Gators were shut out for the first time in their last 80 games.

The two teams face off again Saturday in Tuscaloosa at 2 p.m.
