OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) - The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is using a new tool that they hope helps residents build a safer community.

The sheriff’s office has partnered with crimemapping.com to show residents what’s going on in their neighborhoods.

“You can put in your address or you might want to move to and it will show you all the crimes that have taken place within the last seven days,” MCSO Public Information Officer, Valerie Strong said.

You can also adjust the time frame to show crimes from up to six months ago.

MCSO has always had crime mapping available on their website, but officials said this software is much more efficient and user friendly.

“The previous one did give you exactly, it just gave you a little snippet of what type of crime, this one gives you a case number as well,” Strong added.

And it shows which law enforcement agency responded to each crime, on what day, and time.

You can see everything from DUI arrests, to vandalism to homicides.

“It’s the perfect tool to keep you informed of what’s going on around your home, and a perfect tool to help you when you’re moving into the county to know exactly where you’re moving into,” she said.

The sheriff’s office does pay a fee to utilize this software, but is free for the public to use.
