GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Learning to line dance is no sweat for the “BLSSD Future” dance group. Although, the group will break a sweat to raise funds so kids can have access to STEM knowledge all year long.

“This is probably one of the best camps if I say so,” said the Principal of Caring and Sharing Learning School, Curtis Peterson.

The “I Am STEM” camp is run by Caring and Sharing Learning school in East Gainesville and hosts 100s of kids each year virtually and in-person. The majority of campers served in the camp are young African Americans from Alachua County.

“Dissecting animals, different stem fields, college tours, college prep, ACT/SAT prep, and everything else that you could ever imagine that works with students,” added Peterson. “So they get exposed to things they never have seen before and more than likely they would not be exposed to.”

easier said than done but giving line dance a chance can give a student an opportunity for more STEM education during the summer break. The group’s goal is to send 20 students to “I Am STEM” camp at no cost. Wanda Lloyd has been a part of the “I Am STEM” camp since its inception in 2017 and is prepping her line dance group for the 4th annual Teach Me To Dance fundraiser meant to raise funds to cover summer camp fees.

“I believe God has led me to use what I like, use what I love to raise money,” said Lloyd. " I love teaching, I teach 3rd grade at Talbot Elementary and when I learned this dance I taught it to students and then adults were saying, are you gonna teach us? So that’s what I’m doing and by teaching adults we’re raising money all year long for students.”

The line dance group practices every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 5:45 at Bo Diddley Plaza in Gainesville.

“Sometimes we’re not getting everything that we need, everything that we want sometimes, and this fundraiser is allowing more students that look like us to have that opportunity.”

The group has a goal of raising at least $7,200 to cover camp costs. The fundraiser is at Citizen’s Field at $20 for admission.
