HAWTHORNE, Fla. (WCJB) -Members of the American Legion Post 230 and the American Legion Auxillary hosted their first-ever family fun day.

The American Legion is a patriotic organization made up of veterans who provide help to other veterans and this year they hosted a community event to get the word out about the services they offer.

“We want to let the veterans know that not just the post is here for them, but the community as well,” Jane Townsend, the post commander said. “We want to be the one that prevents a veteran from committing suicide.”

As the rain came and went, veterans and community members were able to grab a bite to eat, socialize, and learn about the various resources in the area catered towards veterans, such as the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs.

“I’m out here trying to help veterans with their state and VA claims, disability claims, benefits, stuff like that,” Joshua Nestved, a veteran service officer shared.”

The event also featured a visit from a police K-9, kids’ games, a bounce house, and face painting for the little soldiers.

“Today it’s called be the one, be the one that asks a veteran how they’re doing,” Mark Scaletti, the Legion’s motorcycle riding director exclaimed. “Be the one that goes up and says do you need to talk?”

Organizers say they plan to host the event next year and every year after on the last Saturday of April.
