GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Tuesday night, Marion County School Board members took the first big step to replace Lake Weir Middle School.

The board unanimously approved a nearly $3 million contract to hire Harvard Jolly Architecture to design a new school.

Despite board members expressing shock at the rising cost of school construction the school’s design will be based on an existing middle school in Palm Beach County.

The old school was built in the 1950s.
