Uthmeier warns Alachua County School Board about trans kids at Camp Crystal Lake
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier sent a letter to the Alachua County School Board after getting a report of male campers sleeping in girls’ cabins.
UPDATE: Alachua County Public Schools changes camp cabin gender policy after Florida AG letter
The letter directs staff at the school district-run Camp Crystal Lake to immediately separate children into their “proper, sex-based sleeping quarters.”
The state attorney’s office received a complaint reporting that two male campers slept in the second-grade girls’ cabin.
Uthmeier suggests the arrangement violates Florida’s Safety in Private Spaces Act.
School district officials say the policy allowing transgender children to sleep in the cabins corresponding with their gender identity rather than their sex is three years old.
District policy requires the other campers’ parental consent and requires students to use changing rooms, showers, and restrooms associated with their biological sex at birth.
This developing story will be updated as more information is learned.
