Alachua school rezoning proposal gains majority support from school board members at workshop
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) — A rezoning proposal from a group of teachers in Alachua received majority support from school board members at a workshop on Wednesday.
Four plans were presented to board members at an Alachua County Public Schools workshop, but staff were told to go back to the drawing board and get the data for a fifth option.
The plan would put all students in grades four and under at Irby Elementary and grades five through eight at Mebane. Alachua Elementary would close.
Leanetta McNealy, Janine Plavac, and Sarah Rockwell supported the idea.
“[Kindergarten] through eight for Irby and five through eight for Mebane. I will not go any other way. That’s the only thing I am going to vote for, and I think it’s extremely important,” Plavac said.
Thomas Vu and Tina Certain oppose the idea, citing concerns with under-enrollment at Mebane, which could lead to state oversight.
Staff will bring back the data on the plan before the May 5 board meeting, where they are expected to vote.
