Hurricane Preparedness Week reminds communities to get ready ahead of hurricane season
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - National Hurricane Preparedness Week is the first full week of May. This year, it’s May 3 through May 9.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other government entities, as well as disaster response groups, share information on how to properly prepare for hurricanes and survive after the storm has passed.
Warnings for tropical storms and cyclones typically begin days before the storms come. But waiting until a hurricane is on the way to get organized brings the risk of supplies selling out in stores, or forgetting important preparations.
There are also tips on how to ensure comfort and survival during the aftermath of a hurricane, which can last several days to weeks.
