Railroad crossing closure on US 301 in Hawthorne expected to impact traffic as far as Gainesville

HAWTHORNE, Fla. (WCJB) - A planned road closure in Alachua County is expected to disrupt traffic throughout the region on Tuesday.

Florida Department of Transportation officials say the railroad crossing along US 301 in Hawthorne will be closed from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. for repair work.

During the closure, traffic will be detoured onto US 441 and State Road 24.

Law enforcement officials warn that drivers in Gainesville may experience heavier traffic as a result of the detour.

Officials note that similar repairs in late 2024 led to significant traffic backups in Hawthorne, raising concerns about delays during this latest closure.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
