GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) -Gainesville city leaders and residents are invited on Friday to the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly remodeled City Hall Plaza, a project approved in 2023 that city officials say creates a more functional gathering space.

The redesign removes the aging ponds that had been part of the plaza since the 1960s, a change officials said was driven by long-standing maintenance issues. In their place, the city added expanded walking areas and remodeled seating, opening up what leaders are calling “The People’s Plaza.”

City Commissioner Casey Willits said the new layout is intended to better accommodate public gatherings and events.

“Refreshing of City Hall Plaza means a more functional space that can fit more people. It has better seating,” Willits said. “It will have the flagpole right in the center as opposed to out on the edge.”

Willits also noted that the updates provide improved access to areas, including the MLK Jr. Garden and the nearby memorial.

According to city officials, the redesigned plaza can accommodate up to 2,400 people, creating a new venue for city and private events at City Hall.

In addition, the city has added rainbow bricks to commemorate the history of Gainesville’s rainbow crosswalks, which were removed in late 2025.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 10–11 a.m. at Gainesville City Hall Plaza. City staff involved with the project are expected to attend, and the mayor and Willits are scheduled to speak.
