GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Alachua County Sheriff’s Office officials have confirmed an inmate died in the county jail on Sunday night.

Officials say Shirley Williams, 68, was being held in the infirmary when a detention officer, doing routine 15-minute checks, found her unresponsive in her bed around 11:15.

The officer immediately performed CPR until additional medical staff arrived. About half an hour later, paramedics ceased life-saving efforts, and she was pronounced dead.

The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, as well as the Office of Professional Standards, will run parallel investigations into the death as is standard practice.
