Newberry city leaders break ground on $132 million ag-tech park investment
NEWBERRY, Fla. (WCJB) - City leaders in Newberry are inviting residents to celebrate the groundbreaking of what will be the start of an agriculture and innovation research park for the city.
The company they’ll be breaking ground with, Harvest Singularity, will construct what they call a 100% controlled environment, industrial hydroponic greenhouse, which will be situated in Newberry’s ag-tech park.
We spoke with Newberry mayor Tim Marden last year, who says there will be two greenhouses built at $66 million, which means this addition is a $132 million investment for the city.
The greenhouse is projected to produce over 3 tons of leafy greens daily.
Leaders also say this project is to help establish Newberry as a premier location for agriculture and food technology companies while strengthening Florida’s food security.
Harvest singularity is also expected to create more than 50 full-time direct new jobs per greenhouse.
It all begins at 10 A.M. on Tuesday at the corner of 220th and State Road 26 in Newberry. The greenhouses are expected to open next year.
