Alachua County post about property tax proposal faces pushback
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Alachua County’s post about Gov. Ron DeSantis’ proposed property tax cuts got hundreds of comments, many of them negative.
County leaders made a post Monday arguing against a proposal that would almost entirely eliminate property taxes in Florida.
In posts titled “Property Tax Facts,” county officials say services such as emergency management, animal resources and road funding will be gutted if state lawmakers move forward with the plan in a special session this week.
Hundreds of people responded in the comments section of the latest post, many expressing doubt about the county’s position.
Under a plan pushed by DeSantis, Florida residents with primary homes worth $250,000 or less would pay zero property tax come fiscal year 2028.
The proposal would see the legislature eventually create a schedule to abolish all homestead property taxes, whether a home is worth $10,000 or $10 million. That proposal needs to pass the legislature and be approved by more than 60% of voters to go into effect.
