Tom Petty Park makeover becomes official in Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - A park older generations may still call Northeast Park is getting a fresh start. The City of Gainesville is set to officially unveil recent upgrades to what is now Tom Petty Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony later today.
I’m at the park this morning, standing on a brand-new pickleball court, one of several additions made as part of a larger renovation effort. In the past couple of years, the park has undergone significant changes—both in name and in amenities.
In 2018, the park was officially renamed Tom Petty Park in honor of the rock legend who grew up in Gainesville. City leaders say the former Northeast Park played an important role in Petty’s early years.
Now, the most recent physical upgrades are being celebrated with a community ribbon cutting.
The renovation was funded through Gainesville’s voter-approved Wild Spaces & Public Places half-cent sales tax, a program designed to raise revenue for improvements to recreational facilities across the city.
Gainesville Mayor Harvey Ward said the city responded to a clear demand from residents—especially those advocating for pickleball.
“Pickleball players are pretty evangelistic about their sport. And they let us know over the last several years that they needed more pickleball courts,” Ward said. “So we have delivered state-of-the-art pickleball courts at Tom Petty Park. We’ve improved the tennis courts. We paved walking trails so that they’re available for people of all abilities.”
In addition to the new courts, the city built new restroom facilities and installed new lighting for night games. Mayor Ward said investing in the East Gainesville park is something the entire community can celebrate.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Residents are encouraged to stay afterward to check out—and enjoy—the park’s new additions.
