Vystar Credit Union hosts identity theft prevention event

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Leaders at a local credit union are trying to raise awareness of identity theft through free consultations.

Gainesville’s Vystar Credit Union hosted their “Shred to Protect” event today. Workers there shared tips and tricks on preventing identity theft.

They say it’s especially important to protect your personal information.

“When it comes to identity theft it’s only maybe your tax documents or your bank statements that people are going to pick up but it could be anything could be expired ID. It could be prescription drugs with your information on that it would be anything else,” said David Bulley, branch vice president.

They even had an industrial shredder there so people could shred old sensitive documents on site before they get into the wrong hands.
