GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - A proposed 12-story apartment building near the University of Florida received the blessing of the city plan board Thursday night to add even more apartment units.

Plan Board members signed off on land use and zoning changes to allow The Verve project, located near Southwest Second Avenue and Southwest Tenth Street, to grow to 227 units with 682 bedrooms. The number of affordable units rises to 34.

Chair Bobby Mermer tells TV20 the board added a recommendation that the city commission not allow a “Payment-lieu-of” option for the developer instead of building those affordable units.
