Gainesville City Leaders commemorate pride month with historical monument
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) -As we near the end of June, we also wrap up Pride Month.
TV20’s Hawah Ezell spoke with Gainesville City Commissioner Casey Willits about how the city commemorates the LGBTQ+ community year-round with a repurposed historical monument, formerly known as the rainbow crosswalk in downtown Gainesville.
“The LGBTQA community, they’ve been here, and they’ve participated in civic life and personal life and private life and church life,” Willits stated. “And so this is really a historical marker for our whole community …to show that Gainesville is a place that is welcoming and open to everybody. No matter where they come from, no matter who they love, no matter how they identify.”
You can see repurposed bricks at the very front of Gainesville City Hall.
