TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Crews battled a fire at the R.A. Gray Building in downtown Tallahassee Thursday afternoon, according to the Tallahassee Fire Department.

Reports of an active fire in the building came in around 3:45 p.m., the fire department revealed.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered an exterior fire associated with construction in the area that had spread into the building’s walls, according to the fire department. The fire had spread from the second floor toward the third floor on the south side of the building.

The fire department went on to say Thursday that the fire was contained to the second-floor wall cavity.

Construction workers were outside when crews arrived and the building was evacuated, according to firefighters. Employees who were evacuated were let back in around 6:30 p.m. to collect their belongings.

Furthermore, there were no injuries reported nor any reports of damaged artifacts, TFD said.

“There doesn’t appear to be any damage to any artifacts right now. There may be some paperwork that was in some of the offices and stuff like that got a little wet, but the main damage was to the wall,” Persing said Thursday.

In a social media post Friday morning, the Florida Department of State said they were happy to share “that everything is secure at the R.A. Gray Building after yesterday’s fire.”

The state department went on to say Friday that they look forward to resuming normal operations next week.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The R.A Gray Building houses the Florida History Museum, State Library of Florida, Florida State Archives and the state elections office.
