GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Alachua County is joining an annual traffic safety campaign.

The “Operation Southern Slow down” goal is to reduce deadly and serious crashes caused by speeders. There will be increased law enforcement along I-75, from the Columbia County line to the Marion County line.

The initiative runs from Monday through Saturday.

Alachua County Sheriff’s Office officials say deputies will be looking out for dangerous driving behaviors like speeding, following too closely, and improper use of the left lane.

Officials say if drivers are stopped by law enforcement, they should move over to the right side of the road and pull over as far off as possible. Going just 10 over the speed limit could result in a $199 citation.
