GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - While storms are part of Florida’s summertime weather, neighborhoods around north-central Florida were shaken up by some very strong ones this weekend.

The National Weather Service reported wind gusts above 40 mph, which broke both large and small tree branches, ripped wires from telephone poles and knocked out power for thousands.

After the turbulent weekend, response crews started repairs, including the NW 1st Place neighborhood, which has several broken trees and downed phone lines.

A maintenance worker showed TV20 how some lines have been temporarily taped back to the poles until they can be rewired.

This is a reminder that the state’s simple afternoon thunderstorms can become dangerous, and people should stay indoors during dangerous weather.
