Santa Fe College training center draws neighborhood traffic concerns
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - A $17 million workforce training center is planned for Santa Fe College’s Blount Center campus, just off Northwest 6th Avenue, but the project is drawing concern from nearby residents over traffic and pedestrian safety.
City commissioners voiced support for the project, saying the training center represents the kind of downtown expansion they want to see. They described it as an investment that will support growth while preparing more people for skilled trades.
Commissioner Desmon Duncan-Walker expressed backing for the project and for Santa Fe College’s broader mission.
“I also have a very deep, deep appreciation for Santa Fe College, and the work that particularly Dr. Broady has done in bringing educational opportunity closer to the urban core — where all residents of this community can access it,” Duncan-Walker said.
While many residents said they support the training center, some raised concerns about what the development could mean for surrounding neighborhoods. Residents along Pleasant Street and nearby areas cited increased traffic, pedestrian safety, and the flow of vehicles through the area, including Northwest 6th Street.
Part of Fifth Street may also be closed to accommodate the project, according to information presented to commissioners. The commission failed to reach a decision on whether to keep Fifth Street closed.
The facility is projected to open to students in the fall of 2027. The project is moving forward, and neighbors said they will be watching closely to see how traffic and pedestrian safety concerns are addressed as construction continues.
