Santa Fe College baseball coach Johnny Wiggs retires after 20 years
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Family, friends and the Santa Fe College community gathered to reflect on the career of baseball coach Johnny Wiggs, who is retiring after 20 years leading the program.
During his tenure, Wiggs helped build a program that accumulated more than 600 wins. Among the highlights of his career was the 2009 season, when an underdog Santa Fe team advanced to the national championship game.
Wiggs said some of his proudest moments came from the lasting impact he had on former players.
“Hopefully they thought I was a fair coach, not just a tough coach,” Wiggs said. “I look forward to spending more time with my wife and my grandkids and my kids and just helping them out as much as I can. But to just enjoy life to the fullest.”
Wiggs said he will always be grateful for the players and relationships that made his career meaningful. He said he is now ready to focus on his family.
