GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - A trial priority hearing will be held on Monday in the court case against Saul Macias-Garcia, accused of killing girlfriend Sofia Lugo in late 2023. The court will schedule this case for trial later this month.

Gator football fall practice begins on Wednesday. Excitement is building around the program with new head coach Jon Sumrall. The season starts September 5.

A controversial new school is getting ready to open. The former Newberry Public Elementary School is now a charter school. Their first activity is a meet the teacher day on Thursday.

Also on Thursday, Gainesville city commissioners consider changing the name of the city’s Office of Equity and Inclusion to The Equal Opportunity Office. It’s to comply with or get around the state’s new law banning DEI programs in local government.
