GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - The Gainesville City Commission approved a new grant program aiming to help businesses and property make improvements, especially to complement The Streatery downtown.

The program provides up to $500,000 per business for public-facing improvements, reports say. Businesses along West University Avenue, Southwest Second Avenue, South Main Street and Southwest Second Street will be the main users.

The city is changing the area to be pedestrian-oriented. Following the development, the city will accommodate outdoor dining, festivals, and events, reports say.
