BRONSON, Fla. (WCJB) - The Levy County Sheriff’s Office arrested a fugitive in connection with a deputy-involved shooting Monday morning.

After an hours-long manhunt, sheriff’s deputies arrested Mason Clifton, 25, after they say he fled from a law enforcement stop around 3 a.m.

Levy County Deputy K. Richetti encountered Clifton walking on Northeast 105 Avenue in Bronson. Officials say she stopped him due to a “pedestrian violation.” They noted he was wearing no shirt or shoes and was sweating profusely.

Clifton reportedly attempted to walk away from the deputy multiple times, refused orders to stop, refused to identify himself, and argued with her.

When the deputy attempted to detain Clifton, officials say he ran. Deputy Richetti chased him and fired two shots.

Officials say Clifton wasn’t hit and continued to run. Many law enforcement officers responded to the area and set up a perimeter.

Clifton was found just after noon hiding in a shed a short distance from the area he fled. He was charged with resisting arrest and booked into the Levy County Detention Center.

Officials say Sheriff Bobby McCallum asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) to complete an independent investigation into the deputy discharging a firearm, which is standard practice.

The Levy County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an internal investigation at the conclusion of the FDLE investigation. As per the department’s policy, Deputy Richetti was placed on administrative leave until these investigations are completed.
