One person has died as a result of a fire at an apartment complex in Ocala Sunday afternoon.

Shortly after 3 PM, Ocala Fire Rescue units were dispatched to the 900 block of NE 2nd Street off of E. Silver Springs Blvd., where a fire was reported.

Upon arrival at the two-story, multi-residential, structure, firefighters encountered light smoke showing from the exterior. Firefighters completed a search, finding an unconscious individual. The patient was taken to the hospital, but did not respond to the life support techniques administered, succumbing to their injuries.

The fire, which was contained to the single apartment, was out at 3:20 PM. No other residents at the apartment complex were hurt.

The Red Cross has been contacted to assist with families living in the complex.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Ocala Police Department, Ocala Electric Utility, Marion County Fire Rescue, and a state Inspector, also responded.
