Deputies found a loaded handgun in the student's waistband.
They believe the weapon was stolen, but aren't sure how.
Putman County Sheriff, Gator DeLoach, says the incident hit especially close to home for him.
"It made my blood run cold the moment it was discovered that a loaded handgun was found at my son's school."
At this time, deputies do not know if the student intended to use the weapon at the school.
The student is 12 years old and faces a felony charge of possession of a firearm on a school campus.
