ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. (WCJB)-- A community in north central Florida wants to bail fathers out of jail as a Father's day gift.
Felicia Bell hopes the '352 Father's Day Bail Out' can help with the finances for her son's bail which is about $35,000.
“I wish I could speak on the amount of the bails,” Bell said. "How expensive they are for families that just can't afford it."
Bell's son, Gerlmy Todd, was arrested last October for aggravated assault with a weapon without intent to kill and she is hoping to receive 10% of the bond's value to bail him out.
“I don't think that his crime is harsh enough where he has to stay in jail for that long and not be home for Father's day unless his case is closed,” Bell said. “No one wants their loved ones to be behind those bars for such a long time without being sentenced already."
One of the organizers created the event to give families who do not have enough money for bond, a chance to see their loved ones at home again.
“I think it's been very well established that it's a form of discrimination on an economic basis,” 352 Father’s Day Bail Out organizer Panagioti Tsolkas said. “If you have money, you can walk."
Tsolkas said that spending time in jail for a long period of time disrupts a person's life.
“Even a couple days in jail could really start a cycle where people can lose their jobs and then lose their housing and lose a lot of connections that keep a family really intact,” Tsolkas said.
Bell appreciates the donations that are being made so that her son can be one step closer to being with his family.
“This program is awesome and it takes a lot of weight off of mothers, fathers, kids shoulders so that they could have a better life,” Bell said.
The goal for the event is to raise $20,000 and they are raising the money on their online fundraiser and from people donating cash to them personally.
They plan on bailing out fathers at the Alachua County jail on Monday.
