ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. (WCJB)- 4 people are dead and 1 is in critical condition after a head-on collision on Williston Road.
The incident happened around 4 a.m. on Saturday about a block west of the 13th Street and Williston intersection.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, a Toyota Highlander was driving south in the northbound lanes of SW Williston Rd when it collided head-on with a 2011 Ford Expedition traveling northbound.
The Highlander caught fire, which quickly spread to the other vehicle.
The driver of the Toyota Highlander was killed. His identity has not been released because his family has not been notified.
According to the the FHP press release, the Ford Expedition was carrying four people, 3 of whom were pronounced dead at the scene. They are driver Jerry J. Leffert Jr., 54; James E. Sweet, 75; and Linda M. Sweet, 72.
Theresa M. Leffert, 54, was transferred to UF Shands Hospital in critical condition.
Gainesville Fire Rescue responded to the scene. Firefighters extinguished the fire and extricated the people from the vehicles.
An FHP investigation is underway.
