Gainesville man arrested for shooting man holding baby
A man from Gainesville is in jail tonight after he shot a man and a baby.
"The infant had been shot in the face, and the man had been shot in the abdomen," said Gainesville Police's Spokesperson Ofc. Ben Tobias.
Police said witnesses called 911 Tuesday night around 10 o'clock saying they heard someone arguing, and then, gunshots. It happened at the 1100 block on NE 16th Avenue.
Darrell Wilson, 26, was arrested for attempted murder.
"We have reason to believe that he has cared for the baby numerous times," said Ofc. Ben Tobias.
The police report said the man shot, Torrance Lee, is the baby's biological father, and that the baby's mother and Lee were dropping the baby off at Wilson's house.
"When Wilson came out, he saw what he described as a man hugging and kissing on the side. I don't know if he did not know or did not realize it was the child's father that was hugging and kissing on his own child," said Ofc. Tobias.
I spoke with Wilson's family, who said they thought the baby was his child. They said Wilson had been receiving threatening phone calls from Lee all day, and knew Lee had a record, arrested before for domestic battery and assault.
"He told investigators that he was shooting in self defense because in his words the father was walking towards him looking angry," said Ofc. Tobias.
The car Lee and the baby's mother were driving, still parked across the street, with a baby seat visible in the backseat. There are stains that look like blood on the front of the car.
"I cannot believe, I can't understand, I can't fathom why someone would look anywhere towards the area of a child, an infant, a baby, and make the decision to pull the trigger," said Ofc. Tobias. "That is absolutely barbaric."
Police said both the baby and Lee are going to be okay. Injuries were non life threatening.
