GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - The "Gainesville Out Of The Darkness Walk" is hosted by the North Central Florida chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
This fundraising event helps support and fund different educational programs for suicide prevention awareness. According to the chapter this event, "help us fund research, develop and implement education programs, advocate on both a state and federal level, and support those who struggle or have lost someone to suicide."
The chapter said suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States.
They said they have over 200 people registered for the event and more than 26 teams. In total, they have raised over $20,000 so far.
The event is taking place this Saturday at the Santa Fe College Track from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM. They will have a butterfly memory board at the event to remember and honor loved ones that have passed away. The event is free for the community.
