GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) -- A man was arrested Thursday after Alachua County Sheriff Deputies say he broke into a car parked near the La Chua Trail.
According to the arrest report, deputies say that Nicholas Ja’vaun Lewis, 18, was seen on surveillance footage with other people carrying a hammer and walking around cars parked near the trail. Lewis then picked up a rock and handed it to another man who then threw it at a car window multiple times until it broke.
Lewis was seen reaching through the broken window and grabbing a purse and a Nintendo Switch and then left in a white car. The total value of the items stolen was estimated at $962.94.
Deputies contacted Lewis and placed him under arrest. When he was searched, deputies found a black case with the Nintendo Switch inside it. When questioned, Lewis admitted to having a hammer and was asked to grab the rock that broke the window.
Lewis is charged with grand theft, burglary, and possessing burglary tools. He was booked at the Alachua County Jail with bond set at $3000.
ASO and Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission say they've been investigating a rise in burglaries in the La Chua Trail parking areas.
