NEWBERRY, Fla. (WCJB) — A Newberry man was arrested after the Alachua County Sheriff's Office received a report that he was beating his girlfriend, causing brain bleeding injuries.

According to an ASO arrest report, North Florida Emergency Room West End staff reported that a woman was being treated for injuries from her boyfriend 54-year-old Thomas Lee Mathis Jr.

On Wednesday night Mathis reportedly attacked her in the back parking lot of a Shell gas station on West Newberry Road and was taken to the West End Emergency Room where staff informed ASO about the injuries.

According to the girlfriend, she was seeking treatment for a chronic headache caused by an unreported incident in January where Mathis struck her above the her right eye. West End staff discovered brain bleeding consistent with the time of the incident with injuries still visible and ruled as "severe" by doctors.

Mathis reportedly said that he was going to kill her and that she was the "one woman I go to prison for."

Mathis is charged with aggravated battery and was taken to the Alachua County Jail. His bond is set at $90,000
