The Alachua County school board is taking the "Kirby Smith" out of the "Kirby Smith Center."
The school board headquarters known as the Kirby Smith Center has been in Gainesville since 1900. The name is common in the South because Kirby Smith was known as the last Confederate solider to surrender after the Civil War.
After the removal of the Confederate statue from Gainesville. The school board thought it was time to vote on the removal of the Kirby Smith name. There is no official date yet for the actual removal of the name.
