ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. A decade-long plan to relocate the Alachua County Fairgrounds is finally in the works.
The City of Newberry signed a contract with Alachua County to buy the Canterbury Florida's Equestrian Showplace on Monday evening.
The current fairgrounds site will become a center to bring more jobs to East Gainesville.
They are still searching for an event space to host things like the Annual Alachua County Fair, although the land for the Canterbury site could potentially serve that purpose too.
Alachua County's Assistant County Manager Gina Peebles says some changes need to be made before the new center can open its doors.
“There's some code-required work that's needed,” Peebles said. “For example, it needs to be ADA accessible so we're going to have to invest some money to bring it up to today's standards but the county's aware of that and we'll get to working on that right away."
The name of the new facility will be called The Alachua County Agriculture and Equestrian Center.
Newberry agreed to provide approximately $1.5 million in funding to the county to enable the project.
