ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. (WCJB) - The Alachua County Board of Commissioners has finally reached a decision on the sale of Camp McConnell.

At the meeting Tuesday afternoon, commissioners voted 4-to-1 to sell the land to the South Florida group Friendship Circle for $1,025,000.

Camp Florida was also being considered for the sale, but instead, the board passed a motion to explore other sites where the organization could operate its camps.

Commissioners suggested Kanapaha Park as one of the many options for Camp Florida. They will discuss the options further at a policy meeting in the next few months.

Camp Florida issued a statement, saying in part: "We are very saddened by the commission's decision today. it is the duty of the county commission to do the right thing by the taxpayer, not to be fair to a private religious group."
