Alachua County arrest suspect in deadly weekend shooting

UPDATE 12 p.m.: Alachua County deputies say a suspect in a deadly shooting in Gainesville has been arrested.

Deputies say Montric Montreal Thomas Jr., 21, was arrested in Jacksonville on a warrant for Murder, Tampering with Evidence, Tampering with a Victim/Witness/Informant and Possession of a Firearm by a Delinquent in the death of Jeremy Provin, 21.

Deputies say Provin was shot once in the chest at the apartment the pair stayed in together at the Fox Hollow Apartments.

UPDATE: Detectives have identified Jeremy Alexander Provin, 21, from Jacksonville as the man found shot in Fox Hollow Apartments this morning.

The person of interest, Montric Thomas Jr., was in the apartment where the victim died, and left the scene in a resident's Ford Focus before deputies arrived.

Thomas Jr. arrived at the Jacksonville Sheriff Office this afternoon and detectives are continuing the investigation there.

Initial findings indicate that Provin and Thomas Jr. knew one another prior to this incident.

Provin was not a resident of the apartment, but stayed there on occasion.

ORIGINAL STORY: A resident of the apartment where Provin was shot made contact with a neighbor after the shooting, and the neighbor was able to contact the Sheriff's Office.

Around 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning, Alachua County deputies responded to an apartment off West University Avenue near Tower Road following a report of an emergency and discovered an adult male shot and killed.

Based on preliminary information, detectives have identified Montric Montreal Thomas Jr., 21, as a person of interest in the case and believe he is driving the 2007 white Ford Focus with a Florida tag '5582BD' and unique graphics and damage are on the car.

ACSO are still working to confirm the identity of the victim and notify his family.
