ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. (WCJB) --
The Alachua County fairgrounds are moving from the Gainesville site to the Equestrian Center in Newberry.
The Alachua County Commission closed on the former Canterbury Equestrian Showplace after a year-long process.
There is currently not a time frame for when the facility will be ready, but county officials say that events planned for Canterbury before the sale will still be going forward.
"We're hoping to start making some notable improvements just as quickly as we can, but we have to finalize all of the plans. We have to get our building permits, so there are some of those 'behind the scenes' types of things that have to occur," said Gina Peebles, Assistant County Manager.
They are looking to add additional facilities, like an auditorium, to the existing horse stables, barns, and event space already there.
The county is negotiating with the US Army Reserve to turn the old site into an equipment storage base.
