Alachua County says they will no longer use inmates for work projects

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. (WCJB) -- Alachua County formally notified the state on Tuesday that it will no longer use inmates for work projects. after some protested what they called the use of "slave labor," the county commission voted to end its agreement with the state department of corrections.

Tuesday, County Commission chair Chuck Chestnut sent a certified letter to the Department of Corrections to notify them of the change.

inmates from the Gainesville work camp have worked along county roads for many years and in exchange have had time reduced for their sentences.
