_________________________________________________________Almost a year since the shooting death of a man from Alachua, a suspect is now behind bars.
With the help of Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies, the Alachua Police Department made an arrest in the 2018 murder of 19-year-old Quantrale Gaskins. That took place just six months after the first homicide in the city of Alachua in a decade.
"We got a cold-hearted murderer off the streets and out behind bars, stated Chad Scott, chief of Alachua Police.
For the past year Alachua detectives say they have been working countless hours to bring 19- year- old Quantrale Gaskins' killer to justice.
21- year-old Hakiem Brockman who is a Palm Beach County resident has been charged with premeditated first-degree murder for the 20-18 shooting death of Gaskins.
"Through a thorough and exhausting investigation, it was determined that Hakiem Brockman traveled to Alachua, perpetuated the murder and then returned to Palm Beach County," stated Scott.
Detectives say Brockman and Gaskins did not know each other but investigators believe that the motive is gang related.
"The motive between these two groups, there's a lot of history between these two groups and as we've said in the past, it is gang-related as far as you know local gangs here in Alachua, those that have named themselves gangs," stated Sandusky.
"Brockman has associates in Palm Beach with close ties to Alachua," stated Scott.
Several other shootings that happened in Alachua last year are being connected to this one as gang-related,
And one of the suspects in a retaliation shooting in 2018 was also captured by Palm Beach sheriff deputies days after Gaskins murder.
"The best we can do is continue this investigation, put some heat on these individuals and make sure they know we're watching and try not to give them an opportunity to commit further crimes," stated Sandusky.
Police say the arrest of Brockman may not be the last.
"With Brockman now in custody, the investigation will focus on identifying others who played a role in the murder of Quantrale," stated Scott.
