Alachua County is joining in the fight against the opioid crisis.
At the end of last month, the county filed a lawsuit in state court against various pharmaceutical manufacturers and doctors.
The county's concerns include not just the illegal trade of opioids, but also what county officials describe as overprescribing by medical professionals.
"I think our board just decided it's come to a point in the United States where this has to be addressed. Self-policing in the industry has not seemed to have done it. Our board wants to be proactive in protecting its citizens," said county spokesperson Mark Sexton.
County officials expect the lawsuit to eventually consolidate with other similar suits throughout the country.
