GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB)- Gainesville Fire Rescue removed a car that drove into a retention pond.
On Sunday around 5 pm, a car was reported rapidly sinking into a pond by the Walmart on Waldo Road.
When GFR arrived the driver was on-shore, disoriented and unable to tell first responders if anyone else was trapped in the vehicle.
The car's roof was several feet below the surface of the pond.
GFR Search and Rescue was deployed. They found no one else inside.
"One of the hazards of this response was the fact that it was a retention pond and the possibility that the water was heavily contaminated. All of our firefighters that entered the water had to be de-conned on the scene and all of their equipment had to be sufficiently cleaned," said GFR Fire Chief Jeff Lane.
The driver was transported to UF Health for evaluation.
Initial reports say the driver was speeding and lost control, crashing the car into the water.
Gainesville Police are currently investigating to see if there were any other factors involved.
