Church pays off medical debt for people in 5 NCFL counties

DELAND, Fla. (WCJB)-- The generosity of a church congregation means that crippling medical debt owed by many in North Central Florida will be canceled.

June 30th was the 53rd Sunday of the fiscal year for Stetson Baptist Church in Deland. It wouldn't be needed for church operating expenses, so the offering that day was earmarked for paying off the medical debt of people in Volusia County. They do this through a group that purchases debt for a penny on the dollar.

But last Sunday they announced they had raised enough to pay off medical debts for people in five counties, including Marion and Putnam as well as fund three foster homes for a year.
