City Commissioners discuss changes to Public Comment at commission meetings

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Discussion items included:

Adding an early citizen comment to start the meeting where citizens can address multiple agenda items but then waive their right to speak at the rest of the meeting.

Applause and cheering will only be allowed during proclamations and no other times.

Citizens may not be allowed to comment at all on agenda items deemed "purely informational or procedural." Commissioners did not have an agreement on this particular issue.

Citizens may have to pre-register to take part in public comments. However the timeline of what the cut-off time, whether it be an hour before the meeting or 15 minutes into an agenda item, was heavily debated by commissioners.

Also how interruptions can be handled including the mayor calling for a commission vote to remove disruptive individuals, allowing the mayor to call a recess or even end the meeting altogether.

All of these items were only up for discussion at tonight's meeting and will be adjusted and voted on formally at a later date.
