Construction underway for new road in Gainesville
A new road is underway in Southwest Gainesville to ease some of the traffic on Interstate 75.
The cost of the project is $3.4 million and it is funded by the City of Gainesville and the Florida Department of Transportation.
The road will link SW 47th Avenue by the post office and the road will curve north to Archer Road and become 40th Boulevard.
“We're hoping that it would alleviate a lot of traffic congestion here in town because it will create a new north-south corridor, especially as Butler Plaza and Celebration Pointe continue their development,” City of Gainesville spokesperson Chip Skinner said. “People won't necessarily have to drive out of their way to get on I-75 and head south. They can still do so within the Gainesville city limits."
The city plans to construct another road in 2022 that will extend 62nd Boulevard near the Oaks Mall to Clarke Butler Boulevard.
