DNA evidence brings on additional charges for Gainesville man accused of sexual assault

Gainesville, Fla. (WCJB) -- DNA evidence obtained Monday by Gainesville police has brought on additional charges to a man accused of brutally raping a woman last month.

DNA evidence obtained Monday by Gainesville police has brought on additional charges to a man accused of brutally raping a woman last month.

Officers accused Edward Spaulding, 61, of raping a woman near South Main Street after offering to walk her home.

The woman was rendered unconscious but was able to get help from a stranger who called the police.

Officers were able to identify Spaulding using video surveillance from a nearby business.

Spaulding was originally charged with failure to register as a sex offender.

After receiving the results of the DNA samples, police officers have now also charged him with sexual battery. He is being held in the Alachua County Jail on a bond set at $500,000.
