TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCJB) -- Flexing his veto power, Governor Ron DeSantis shot down a bill that would have put a moratorium on local bills banning the use of plastic straws.
Using his first veto since taking office, DeSantis wrote in his veto that the Florida Department of Environmental Protection is encouraging residents to reduce plastic straw use.
Cities like Gainesville, which recently banned plastic bags, will now have the legal backing to expand or enforce bans including plastic straws.
Florida environmental groups cited the veto as a win, claiming it will preserve the state's environment and reinforce home rule.
Recently, restaurants and bars around the state have begun voluntarily transitioning to paper straws.
