GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – The renovation of a restaurant in Gainesville paid tribute to the heritage of the building while giving it a new look.
Sonny's BBQ located at 2700 NE Waldo Rd. celebrated the remodel to the original restaurant that was established in 1968.
The renovations include a full kitchen remodel, larger restrooms, a memorabilia wall and a new ceiling.
Founder of Sonny’s BBQ, Floyd “Sonny” Tillman, said he is happy to see the restaurant still serving food for over 50 years.
“We appreciate the people,” Tillman said. “There’s no way I could’ve done this by myself."
During the celebration, there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a chance for guests to create their own barbecue sauce with dry ingredients provided by the restaurant.
“The building was 52 years old and obviously it’s beginning to show some age,” said Josh McCall, Sonny’s BBQ Director of Operations. “We needed greater capacity. The sales are continuing to grow and we just wanted to be able to serve our guests as wells we always have.”
The restaurant has a program called Random Acts of BBQ to recognize people in the community who give selflessly. Sonny’s BBQ will surprise the nominee with a meal.
