Duke Energy's new solar power plant in Trenton making progress

TRENTON, Fla., (WCJB) --- Duke Energy is looking to have nine solar power plants operating by 2020

"Solar is definitely cleaner energy but its important at duke energy that we have diversified fuels and different energy sources for our customers," said Ana Gibbs, spokesperson for Duke Energy.

Duke Energy's new solar power plant in Trenton will cover about 700 acres and provide power to about 23,000 homes.

Duke is looking to have almost 300,000 tracking solar panels on the site and the project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

"The building part is done in mid-November but then after that, you have to connect it to our grid and that our customers will be enjoying the power that's coming from this site in December," said Gibbs.

With a new solar plant in the works, there is a need for a lot of manpower.

"We want to be great partners with this community and we are working with career source to hire over 300 people to be a part of this particular site," said Gibbs.

"You need a driver's license, come get ready to fill out an application, there are interviews on the spot, drug testing on the spot, and best of all there's hiring on the spot," said Ron Jones, director of IT and Business for CareerSource.
