Alachua county deputies have identified the body that was recovered from Newnan's Lake Tuesday night.

Deputies say 65-year-old Alphonso Williams was found dead floating in the lake.

Deputies originally found his 10-to-12 foot boat circling the water of Newnan's lake Tuesday morning.

According to deputies, Williams was the only one on the boat so they've ended their search.

A scary Tuesday for some boaters in East Gainesville…

“Just before 11 this morning, deputies responded here to 5900 SE Hawthorne Rd., the Newnans Lake boat ramp of a boat that had been found by passerby on the water,” said Sgt. Chris Sims, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office P.I.O.

Deputies say the 10-to-12 foot boat was still in motion and circling the water.

“The boat had no occupants inside and the passerby had great fear that someone was possibly in the water,” said Sims.

Alachua County Marine and Underwater Recovery Unit and the Sheriff’s Office boat came out to search the lake.

Deputies say the cause is still unclear, and they aren’t ruling anything out.

“We don’t have anything that rises to foul play suspicion at this time, we do have criminal investigators on scene as well,” said Sims.

The identification of the boater is not known at this time.

“If anyone has any information or a missing relative or someone they know that came to the area today on a fishing trip, and that person isn’t able to get in contact with, we ask you contact the Alachua County 24 hour dispatch center,” said Sims.

Deputies say it’s unclear exactly how many people were on the boat.
